In terms of Canadian immigration, how much can a local federal Member of Parliament (MP) help with an IRCC immigration application? Let’s start with the fact that in Canada we have both elected Members of the Provincial Parliament (MPP) and federal Members of Parliament (MP). The federal Members of Parliament have a direct line with the Canadian immigration department (IRCC). Typically, what this means is that IRCC has a dedicated desk/staff specifically to respond to federal Members of Parliament across Canada.

Technically almost anyone can go to a local MPs office, but in 99% of cases, they are more responsive to Canadian citizens, as they are the voting member of their constituency (which means they voted for this MP or could potentially vote for them in future elections). Of course, Canadian citizens can help assist their families/relatives who have immigration cases pending with IRCC. As well, Canadian companies/employers can help follow up with their local MP on work permits and nominations stuck with the immigration departments. The local MPs office will not refuse to help a Canadian PR or somebody who is on a TRV, but don’t expect much.

1: They have dedicated staff/assistants who will typically take care of all immigration (IRCC) requests. And trust me, there are a lot of requests that come to the MPs offices for immigration-related issues
2: They can check the status of an application. Typically, they make a request, and the IRCC office gets back to them either within a week, or a few weeks depending on the type of application, with an updated status.
3: With this type of help, what this means is that they can perhaps ‘find’ an application or ‘re-activate’ it if IRCC has lost it or it’s stuck in limbo
What I have noticed is that with applications inside Canada, the IRCC magically ends up processing (i.e., rendering a decision) them within 4-6 weeks after this update status request has been sent by the local MP. With overseas offices, this is a mixed bag – as not all embassies have this responsiveness.
It's important to seek your local MP’s help after the application has passed the standard processing times published by IRCC on their website, click here to find out.
1: They cannot approve or make an application by IRCC to be processed faster.
2: They cannot appeal or influence the IRCC application processing in any way. All they are capable of is requesting assistance from their dedicated IRCC desk, either for some generic advice or an update on the status of an existing application.
3: They cannot file an application for you or help you submit one.

Before you go running to your local MP’s office, you need to be aware of the following key points:
1: Not all MPs are created equally. Depending on how busy they are, what party they’re affiliated with, and so forth, some may not be as responsive as others.
2: You will need to make an appointment with the constituency office, and this must be the office for the MP in the area where you reside (as a Canadian voter).
3: You do NOT have to have permanent residence status or citizenship to access this resource (but it does help to be a citizen that has been registered to vote because the databases for the various MPs are built upon the Elections Canada registered voter list).
