As everyone should know by now, the IRCC has prioritized in its backlog processing initiative the work permits and family sponsorship applications to address the labour shortage. They have plans to hire additional staff of up to 1250 by the fall of 2022 to address the huge existing delays. An $85 million boost in the past year has allowed them to restart the Express Entry draws. Family sponsorship, such as spouses & common-law & conjugal PR processing has been in line with 12 months as promised. However, what they missed to mention is that all this staff need training. When will that happen? Do you want an untrained IRCC officer reviewing and deciding on your file or somebody more experienced?
Some quick stats regarding Canada immigration backlog: 349,000 new work permits were issued until the end of July of this year (2022). Also, a record-breaking 360,000 new study permits processed this year (2022) until the end of July.
The IRCC target is 431,000 new permanent residents to be processed with their COPR’s by the end of 2022 – so far 275,000 have been processed until the end of July 2022.

Most people are upset with IRCC. Whether it’s the caregiver association of Canada, parents, and students waiting for delayed study permit processing in overseas visa processing centers, Provincial Nominee applicants, or federal work permits under the C10, C11, C12, and of course who can forget the Self-Employed and Startup Visa Program applicants .
The reality is that it will take IRCC another 2 years to catch up because hiring and training and upgrading their infrastructure to cope with the demand is not going to happen overnight. It’s all good news based on what IRCC and the immigration minister are announcing, but if you are an actual applicant for PR waiting for processing, you know the facts, and that is it’s slow and tedious with many mistakes.

Here is what we are seeing for our clients in terms of IRCC processing times (and this has nothing to do with what IRCC is publishing on their website, but what we are actually seeing in real life – not theory):
*Study Permit extensions inside Canada are taking approx. 1-4 weeks max if there are no discrepancies or red flags on the file and depending on your nationality and age.
*Student Direct Stream (SDS) from outside Canada is taking approx. 2 months for processing, and in some cases even 3 months.
*We are seeing regular study permits (non-SDS) from outside Canada in South America being processed within 4 weeks.
*Low and High wage LMIAs are being processed within 3-4 weeks by Service Canada.
*Visitor visa processing from India for applicants with immediate family in Canada at approx. 3 weeks.
*Visitor visa renewals from inside Canada for applicants with valid work or study permits are approx. 6 weeks.
*Overseas work permit applications are ranging from 4 to 6 months in most of Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Africa. In Central and South America, we are seeing this at half the processing times of other regions.
*Startup Visa Work permits are also 4-6 months from outside Canada.
*Startup Visa PR processing is a cool 2.5 years as per the IRCC processing times – not more and not less.
*Provincial Nomination support letters and certificates for most provinces are taking 3.5 to 4 months. Smaller provinces like PEI are significantly faster. BC and Nova Scotia are the slowest provinces for the PNP nominations.
*Express Entry PR processing is getting close to 6 months from inside Canada, but higher from outside.
