COVID-19 Travel Restrictions and General COVID Related Immigration Updates

During COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian government strongly advise all Canadians to postpone or cancel any non-essential travel plans outside the country. For international travelers, regardless of citizenship, here’s the COVID testing, and quarantine procedures need to follow.

1. Before travelling to Canada:

- Ensure you are exempted from travel restrictions; you can fill out a quick questionnaire to pre-assess if you are eligible to travel to Canada: https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/wizard-start

- Pre-board COVID-19 negative laboratory test result must be presented to the airlines before boarding international flights to Canada. Test result must be obtained within 72 hours of your scheduled departure time.

- Prepare a detailed quarantine plan and electronically submit it online.

- Before boarding the flight, you must download ArriveCAN App and submit your information before you board your flight.

**Note: If you submitted information before February 22, 2021, you must update or download the latest version of ArriveCAN and re-enter and submit your information, answer new questions, and get a new ArriveCAN receipt.

- Reserve your 3-night pre-paid mandatory hotel stay at four international arrival airports:

  • Alberta: Calgary International Airport (YYC)
  • British Columbia: Vancouver International Airport (YVR) Ontario:
  • Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ)
  • Quebec: Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL)

2. Boarding your flight to Canada:

You will be subject to a health check prior to boarding and during the flight you must wear a non-medical mask or face covering.

3. Arriving in Canada:

Upon arrival to Canada, you will be assessed regardless of citizenship. You should get ready of the following information/documents to present to the Border Service Officer:

  • The purpose of your travel, whether you are feeling ill or unwell, and other questions as need to complete their assessment;
  • Must wear a mask;
  • Provide required documents including your ArriveCAN receipt, proof of valid COVID-19 molecular test;
  • Comply with mandatory quarantine requirements and provincial and territorial restrictions

4. Boarding your flight to Canada:

On day 10 of quarantine you will take another COVID-19 test, following the instructions provided to you. Also, you must stay in your place of quarantine while awaiting test result.

Who is exempt from quarantine?

Some travelers may be exempt from the mandatory quarantine requirements under certain conditions, including if you:

  • Provide essential services;
  • Maintain the flow of essential goods or people;
  • Are receiving medical care within 36 hours of entering Canada (non-related to COVID-19);
  • Regularly cross the border to work;
  • Live in an integrated trans-border community

***There are strict requirements you must follow even if you are exempt from quarantine. You must:

  • Wear a mask at all times when in public spaces;
  • Maintain a list of all close contacts for your first 14 days in Canada;
  • Monitor yourself for signs and symptoms of COVID-19
