Did you know that you could go to your local Member of Parliaments' (MPs) constituency office for information on your immigration file? Most MPs (elected officials at the Federal level) have a caseworker that specializes in Immigration (I was once one and continue to contribute my knowledge to certain elected officials). In fact, almost all the work an MPs constituency office does relates to immigration to Canada. However, most people do not understand what the office does or how it factors in immigration cases. Your local MP has a hotline and e-mail accounts that are only available to MPs that are directed to a small but specific office within Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (and other functions of government). They can use these communication lines to contact IRCC and ask for information. This is especially useful for cases that seem to have stalled (no communications from Immigration long after expected wait times) to figure out what may have happened to a case. What this sometimes does is “unjam” a file in case a file has been sitting for far too long without progress. Now, before you go rushing to an MPs office, know that you will have to make an appointment with the constituency office and it has to be the office for the MP in the area you reside (live in). You do NOT have to have permanent residence status or citizenship to access this resource (but it does help to be a citizen that has been registered to vote because the databases for the various MPs are built upon the Elections Canada registered voter list).

Depending on the riding, they may not be able to give you an in-person meeting and will instead ask for e-mail communications. You will also be in touch with the caseworker (not MP) because most MPs do not know much about Immigration (if they have any knowledge about Immigration beyond released party talking points). I have also seen many potential immigrants go to an MPs office to ask for a “support” letter from the MP. While most do write one as a courtesy (to make themselves look good), know that including such a letter can be detrimental to your case. Within the Immigration department itself, these “support” letters hold absolutely no value. They are ignored completely and do not help your case. Where it is detrimental is if the case needs to be presided by a judge. Within politics, many MPs know many judges. A support letter from MPs could be construed as interference with the independent nature of the judicial system which would throw a crisis on your Immigration case. While you do hear of MPs getting involved in Immigration cases, it is usually only after the media feels there is merit enough to advocate a story on it (and this usually leads to a complete policy change that affects more than just a singular case). The key takeaway is that MPs are not immigration specialists and would not be able to vet your case with any competency but they are a resource that can be utilized when your case has been in the queue for too long.
