Landed Immigrants versus Canadian Citizenship: Know the difference

Canada is a great place to stay. It has great facilities, quality atmosphere and a lot of benefices for the people staying there. However, there are notable differences between the people who are a citizen of Canada and people who are called as landed immigrants that are the permanent residents in Canada. From the rights and privileges plus the status as well as obligation everything has a different aspect.

Permanent Residency or Landed Immigrants

The term landed immigrant is used for those people who have got the legal status as permanent residents in a country.  The permanent residency can be explained after having a work permit and fulfilling the criteria or sometimes when people buy the business over there or when people enter the country via express entry. The term permanent residency is still regarded as landed immigrants by the natives. However to be counted as landed immigrants you need to get in touch with immigration companies whereas a citizen does not needs the same.

As per the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website the “landed immigrant”  or called a permanent resident is all the more the same thing.

As explained by the IRCC’s Glossary, a permanent resident is a person who has immigrated to Canada via legal terms but still, he is not counted as a Canadian citizen.   To be a permanent resident also a person needs to eligible for the PR status under a specific class or a category. Until you are eligible you should not apply for the same. The ones who get a Permanent Residency are legally allowed to enter Canada, stay there and even work and study without any requirement of the work permit subject to certain conditions.  To get into the category of landed immigrants you can invest in Canada also for the same. As per the list of conditions, a   permanent resident needs to be physically present in Canada for a minimum period of 730 days in a stated five-year period to maintain its residency. Though, certain exceptions are applicable in this case too.  There are also certain conditions in which a permanent residence can lose its PR  such as when they become a Canadian citizen or the person is unable to fulfil the regulations stated for the residency. Even if the person is involved in some security-related issue or is founding violating human or international rights or he is involved in a serious crime then also the permanent residency can be cancelled by the government.

Canadian Citizenship

To be a Canadian citizen you should be either included by way of a grant, by descent or you should be born in Canada.  Being a citizen of Canada one has the right to work and study there. Under the permanent residency, there is a condition that the person should be staying there for a minimum period of 730 days out of five years, this condition is not applicable here. The citizens can stay wherever they like and get a Canadian passport the Canadian citizens need to provide documents stating they are citizen to the embassy. Loss of citizenship is in a very limited case in comparison to those having permanent residency.

Thus these are the certain differences that exist between a landed immigrant and a Canadian citizen.
