Self employed Canada visa

The Federal Self Employed program allows occupations in Sports, Arts, and Culture to apply for direct permanent residency to Canada. There are over 100 approved occupations that can apply under this program. The purpose of this program is to allow successful, world-class applicants to duplicate their success in their respective professions within Canada. Occupations such as referees, translators, librarians, crafts persons, sculptures, pianists, painters, rug weavers, silversmiths, interior designers and so many more are on the list of approved occupations.

If you don’t want to be refused, or leave your future to ‘luck’ then you need to consider these 5 key factors for success:

You can apply from inside Canada for the self employed visa

This is probably a point many of you have not considered or were aware of for this program:

  1. You can apply both from inside or outside Canada.

  2. This means you can have an operational business inside Canada and then apply for your PR under this program.

The way to increase your chances 10-fold is to enter Canada with a Federal entrepreneurial work permit, start & run the business for 6 months and then apply under the Federal Self Employed Program. The main refusal reason under this program is that the IRCC officer does not believe your ‘intention’ and business plan to come and set up your self-employed business in Canada. With this move, you can overcome this refusal reason and have proof of your existing business inside Canada which is related to Art/Culture or Sports. All this means is that you will be combining two Federal immigration programs, work permit & PR, to increase your chances of approval.

Cultural and/or social benefits are also valid for the self employed Canada visa

If you don’t know this, it’s time to understand that entrepreneurial work permits can be issued based on not just significant economic benefits for Canada, but rather social and/or cultural benefits as well. This means you can apply for a work permit to come and set up your business inside Canada based on social and/or cultural benefits. All you need is a business plan, proof of funds, a registered business in Canada, and some other preliminary steps before you apply for your work permit. Don’t forget, the purpose of all this is to enter and set up, before applying for your PR under the Federal Self Employed program to convince the IRCC officer that you are 100% serious.

World class applicants - Self employed Canada visa

What IRCC means by ‘world-class’ applicants in their respective professions of Art, Culture, and Sports is to prove that you have received recognition/awards or other public relations and media coverage for your professional profile. Any media coverage, international event participation, or competition is key to your success.

Self employed Canada visa requirements

The core of this program designed by IRCC is to allow you to duplicate whatever worldwide success inside Canada as a self-employed person. You need to outline how you will do that, and where in Canada this will be done. Most applicants do include a business plan and proof of funds, although not mandatory. There was a recent Federal court case where over 500 applicants joined and challenged refusals based on not having a business plan or other reasons related to their research or application. Don’t forget, this is an Economic immigration program, and hence the IRCC officers are looking for key criteria and accomplishments in your profile, and your documented plans of what and how you will start your operations inside Canada.

Increase your chances when applying for the self employed Canada visa

Being ‘World Class’ is a very general world used by IRCC in this program. The trick here is to apply to go to smaller cities/towns vs big cities such as Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal/Ottawa/Calgary. If you’re a graphic designer, a pianist, a painter, or an athlete, your skills and accomplishments would be considered ‘world class’ in Saskatoon or Sudbury (these are relatively smaller places in Canada), but they would not really be recognized as world-class in Toronto or Vancouver. This is because there are so many people in these big cities that are in the same exact occupation as you, hence there is a lot more competition. Concentrating on smaller places is a great strategy to improve your chances of approval, and prove ‘world class’ level skills and accomplishments for those regions.
